HOT NEWS : Why Andy Rubin is Quiting Android


Last week Google revealed Android chief was stepping down.  At that time, I posted the following on my Facebook Silicon Valley Network site: “Google Puts Android and Chrome Under One Boss – Focuses on Operating System of the Future.

Andy Rubin was the senior vice president in charge of Android, Google’s mobile operating system.  He is being replaced by Sundar Pichai.  Pichai is the senior vice president of Chrome and will take over Android going forward.

Why is Andy Leaving?  Google is scaling Android and Andy is a inventor and innovator.
Bottom line:  Google in attempting to drive forward their mission to create a new operating system framework that spans desktop/notebooks, datacenters, TVs, and mobile computing are pooling all their resources behind Android.

According to my sources inside Google, Pichai is known as a solid manager and will be expected to shepard the combined resources to achieve the operating system objectives of the company. Google hopes to power all the future devices with their software and their cloud services.

There is an excellent article in theVerge.com that goes in depth on the changes surrounding the Google Android boss Andy Rubin .  In that process, theVerge reiterates what I said in my Facebook post on the Silicon Valley Network site on the news of his departure from heading up the Android team.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 Update Hitting More Users

The Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update, which started rolling out in phases yesterday, has emerged for more users today, a sign that the full on public roll out is under way.

Yesterday, Verizon confirmed that the long-awaited Samsung Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update was indeed going to start rolling out though we didn’t hear from many people who received the update. In fact, our Galaxy Nexus still remains on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean despite Verizon’s roll out. Today though, it appears that Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners, possibly en mass, are receiving the new Jelly Bean software.

The Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 update is hitting more users today.

We’ve heard from numbers owners who say that their Verizon Galaxy Nexus has received Android 4.2 today and it has been confirmed by owners on the XDA-Developer forums. It seems that the roll out, per usual, is random with users across the country reporting the update as live.

Once the update does become live, users will be prompted to download the software and install it. The file is about 88MB in size which means that the process should be relatively quick. After installing, the phone will be reboot and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean will be replaced by Android 4.2.
Android 4.2 of course is the latest version of software from Google and it brings an assortment of features including more Google Now functionality, lock screen widgets, Photo Sphere, gesture-enhanced keyboard, Quick Settings and more. It’s an incremental update but still a fantastic upgrade nonetheless.

Owners who want to the update today have a number of options. First, they can check in their device settings for an update. If it’s there, in the About section of the phone, a prompt will appear.

Smartphone battery life remains an issue for many different handsets with many Apple iPhone users complaining of not getting enough juice in between charges, and we often see cases that come with a battery pack to help things. Now today we have something a little different as the Gridcase Reactor for the iPhone 5 lets users wind up their handset.

This clever idea has been designed by a person Jim Clark who is looking for backing for this neat case, and is looking to raise $350,000 in the next 44 days. The Reactor case uses a patent pending generator that is extremely thin, and basically allows users to manually switch back on their iPhone 5 when no other form of power is available.

It has been designed to quickly provide a power boost to the handset as soon as the handle is turned, and because the Reactor is placed into the smartphones case there will never be a time again when you are left without any power.

There is a small built in battery that will provide enough juice to switch on a completely dead handset, and users will be able to extend the battery life of the iPhone indefinitely. The product features a 400 mAh boost battery, 500 mAh manual generator, and it is only 8.5mm thick weighing only 4.5oz.

iPhone boost helps China Telecom profit beats estimates



It's a pattern that has been repeated over and over; a wireless carrier adds the iPhone to its mix of products and profitability improves. The latest beneficiary of this little bit of Apple magic is China Telecom, which began selling subsidized iPhones last year. The company reported that net income for the quarter fell 17 percent to 2.36 billion yuan (or about US$380 million) from the previous year, but that figure exceeded the 2.04 billion yuan analysts were predicting.

The iPhone helped China Telecom by boosting sales of wireless data dramatically. The company noted that mobile data traffic on its network essentially tripled last year after adding the iPhone to its stable.

China Telecom is the third-largest wireless carrier in the country with 160.6 million users, trailing far behind first-ranked China Mobile with 710.3 million customers and China Unicom at 239.3 million customers. The company was formerly a landline-only telecom operator, entering the wireless business in 2008 through the purchase of one of China Unicom's mobile divisions.

Things aren't all rosy for China Telecom, though. The carrier has reported three consecutive declines in quarterly profit, and the company recently finished the purchase of a 3G network that it will now need to upgrade. As a result of those upgrades, the company expects its capital spending to rise 40 percent in 2013.

calm down Apple fan people - the next iPhone (5S) will have a killer feature



If you are an Apple fanperson who is starting to worry that your smartphone might not be the coolest mobile on the planet any more. Fret not. According to Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty, the next iPhone - the 5S - will include a killer feature that will shut your Android-touting mates up. Well for while anyhow.

Huberty spoke of the feature on a programme on CNBC, reported here, where she defended her positive remarks about Apple - which is odd given the way the share price has been taking recently.
She said

"I do believe that Apple is approaching a bottom. As you have heard, they are talking about returning more cash, and we think they will do that in coming weeks. But people don't own Apple for that, they own Apple for innovation. You saw the Samsung Galaxy S4 come out last week, that shows you the innovation cards are up for grabs. What is lacking in that product [the S4] is a killer feature. We think that's where Apple will surprise this year. This [iPhone] 5S cycle this year will be about a killer feature that drives consumers increasingly to the platform, and that increases the value of those 500 million accounts.'

So what might that killer feature be - a free iWatch that comes with the phone? A new way way of controlling the handset? Fitness and health features built in? Well Huberty, is not saying anything for now.

$50 Gadget Turns the iPhone Into a Universal Remote

Using Griffin’s new Beacon accessory you can turn the iPhone or iPad into a full-blown universal remote.

The Beacon, from accessory maker Griffin, uses Bluetooth wireless connectivity to connect with a base station that can then transmit to a large assortment of living-room entertainment devices. This includes stereo systems, sound bars, high-definition televisions and the Xbox 360. It does this via an app called Dijit.

iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, original iPhone users need not apply however, the $50 accessory is only compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, all versions of the Apple iPad, and the fifth and fourth generation versions of the iPod Touch. There’s also a version of Beacon for those using Android powered phones and tablets. This version includes compatibility with the Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Motorola Droid RAZR, and any device running Android 2.3 or later.

As smartphones continue to grow, accessory manufactures are looking for new ways to extend the usage scenario of a user’s smartphone. For example, add-ons like Square and PayPal’s card reader accessories, have popped up with growing frequency.

This ubiquity also means that manufactures are looking for new ways to prove that making the upgrade to an advanced device is worth it. Lately this has included positioning their devices at the center of not just a user’s communications, but empowering them to replace an increasing array of devices. Though this trend has been more pronounced with cameras (Nokia’s Lumia line outright declares war on pocket cameras with enhanced sensors), using your smartphone as a remote is starting to catch on.

For example, the recently announced HTC One includes an IR sensor that is embedded in the device’s power button. Users can simply change the channel without ever having to hunt around underneath their blankets for a remote that they haven’t been able to find. HTC has even built an entire software experience around being able to use that IR sensor with a guide of what’s available to watch on TV, negating the use for even high-end remotes like Logitech’s Harmony series. The Samsung Galaxy S4 also features an IR sensor to act as a remote control.

What Is Meant By Firmware, Stock & Custom ROMs And Flashing

Do terms like ‘Android ROM’ or ‘iOS firmware’ confuse you? Is your understanding of ‘flashing’ limited to acts of exhibitionism? Do you feel left out or clueless when your friends talk about flashing the latest custom ROM or IPSW to their Android device or iPhone? In what follows, we will explain all about firmware and ROMs – including stock ROMs and custom ROMs – and elaborate on what is meant by flashing them to your phone. We will also take a look at and provide suggestions and sources to find some of the popular custom ROMs, in order to help you choose the right one for your device.

This guide is going to be very detailed and many of you might not need to read all of it. However, we will still be starting from the very basics for those of us who are entirely new to the smartphone world and do not have any idea on how things go in it. Feel free to skip the sections that you already know about.
While most of the concepts in this guide will apply to all past, present and upcoming smartphones and tablets, we will be focusing in particular on the application of these concepts to Android, Windows Phone 7 and Apple iOS devices.

1 – Technical Details

The Very Basics
Let’s start off with the core concepts. As most of us already know, computers require certain system software called an operating system – or OS in short – to operate. Some widely used examples of desktop, laptop & server operating systems are Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, while popular mobile operating systems include Android, Apple iOS, Windows Phone 7, HP/Palm Web OS, BlackBerry OS etc. Most modern consumer electronics such as digital TVs, microwave ovens, set-top boxes etc. also need operating systems to function but usually, that only involves loading the operating system and running it in a predefined manner. That brings us to ROM.

Technical Definition of ROM
ROM stands for Read-Only Memory and technically speaking, it refers to the internal storage of a device, which is supposed to contain the operating system instructions that needn’t be modified at all during the device’s normal operation. For this reason, such instructions are stored in read-only memory – much like on a non-rewriteable CD or DVD – to make sure no changes are made to them that could possibly make the device malfunction. This is in contrast with hard disk drives, solid state drives or regular flash storage devices used by personal computers that allow full read/write access even to the storage area that contains the operating system files.

What is Firmware
The read-only operating systems that we just discussed above are also called ‘firmware’, as they stay firmly in place without modification access to the users of the device. Modification of firmware is still however possible, just not under normal usage. Many devices require specialized hardware to be used for the purpose while other devices have the storage set as read-only through software protection only, which can be removed or overridden without the need for any specialized hardware, just by using software written for the purpose, often but not always requiring connection to a computer.
Thus, the terms ‘operating system’ and ‘firmware’ both refer to the same thing and can be used interchangeably when applied to such devices.
Flashing
The ROM memory used in smartphones and tablets etc. is often same as flash memory found in SD cards and USB flash drives, simply optimized for better speed and performance while running the operating system. As explained above, it is read-only under normal usage and requires a special procedure for any modifications to be made to its contents. The procedure of modifying or replacing the contents of such flash memory is known as flashing. Thus, in layman’s terms, flashing is essentially the same as installing or modifying the firmware of a device that is stored on its protected flash memory.
Now that we have an understanding of the technical concepts, let’s proceed to the next section.

2 – Mobile Operating Systems

Before you continue reading, it will be a good idea to get an overview of modern mobile operating systems. For this purpose, see our introduction to modern mobile operating systems.

ROM as the Operating System
When it comes to smartphones and tablets, the term ROM is used to refer to the firmware stored in the internal memory of the device, rather than the internal memory itself. It can also refer to a file prepared for the purpose of replacing this firmware with another version of using a special method.
Thus, when you are told by someone to download a ROM, they are referring to the file that contains the firmware in a format ready to be installed to your phone to replace it’s existing firmware. Similarly, when asked what ROM is your phone running or when told by someone their phone is running a particular ROM, they are again talking about the particular variant of the firmware.
Types of ROMs

Unlike most desktop operating systems, mobile operating systems can be found in installable format in multiple forms, which can be categorized as follows.
  • Truly Stock ROMs / firmware:
    This is the operating system in its default form, without any modifications made to it except for any device-specific support required to run it on the particular device. Truly stock firmware provides the standard user experience of the operating system without any cosmetic or functional changes made. These days, truly stock firmware is primarily found in cases where both the device and the operating system is built by the same company. Amongst modern mobile devices, examples of truly stock firmware can be found on Apple’s iOS devices, Palm’s WebOS devices and some Android devices shipped without any modifications made to the operating system by their manufacturers.
  • Manufacturer or Carrier branded Stock ROM / Firmware:
    This type of firmware has had enhancements added over the default operating system by the device manufacturer or the mobile service carrier. This often includes interface enhancements, proprietary applications and in most cases, restrictions intended to limit the use of the device with a specific carrier or region. There are often further restrictions preventing installation of firmware not released by the carrier or manufacturer.
    Most Android and Symbian devices fall under this category, and so do most Windows Phone 7 devices but in their case, the changes made from the truly stock firmware are minimal and limited to the inclusion of additional apps only.
  • Custom ROM / firmware:
    Almost all devices ship with either of the above two categories of firmware, though things don’t end there. Independent developers who like to customize their devices beyond the standard options provided often tend to release the fruits of their labor for the rest to enjoy, in form of custom ROMs. The more open the platform, the more independent development it attracts, a good example of which is the independent custom ROM development for Android.
    In case of proprietary firmware such as iOS and Windows Phone 7, there is often little or no room for customization of the operating system itself but regardless of that, developers still tend to release custom ROMs bundled with useful tools and hacks applied to provide functionality beyond the stock features. In fact custom ROM development for the otherwise proprietary and closed-source Windows Mobile platform lead to the formation of the largest independent mobile development community – the XDA-Developers forum.

3 – Stock vs. Custom ROMs

Both stock and custom ROMs have their merits and demerits and choosing between the two requires careful consideration. In this section, we are going to make a comparison between the two types of ROMs to help you make the right choice. Let us begin by taking a look at their advantages and disadvantages. Do note that this section is written with primarily Android (and now obsolete Windows Mobile) devices in mind. However, the many of these concepts will also apply to other smartphone platforms.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Stock ROMs
Stock firmware is the result of a lot of research and testing done by the operating system vendor, the device manufacturer and/or the mobile service carrier. Therefore, it carries several advantages:
  • It is usually quite stable upon release.
  • Almost all bugs are patched during the extensive beta testing before release.
  • It carries the official support by the firmware vendor, device manufacturer and the mobile service carrier.
  • Updates are pushed automatically to the device by the carrier.
Along with its advantages, stock firmware also carries its disadvantages and these include:
  • Updates aren’t frequent, as development is done mostly by corporations who have to follow a scheduled release cycle.
  • Providing feedback to the manufacturer in case of any issues is either impossible, unwelcome (often with Apple devices), or a long, tedious process.
  • Similarly, getting official support can be a hassle as well, involving a tedious process.
  • If the device manufacturer and operating system developer are different (as is the case with Android and Windows Phone 7), any updates released by the operating system vendor need to be edited by the device manufacturer or mobile carrier to add compatibility and additional software before release. Hence, some devices get updates delayed by months.
  • Updates are often released first in the United States, leaving the rest of the world waiting. (A world does happen to exist beyond the United States, we’ve confirmed it ourselves!)
  • Worse still, when manufacturers choose to no longer release official updates for their older devices in favor of newer ones, their users are essentially stuck with old versions of the operating system. This case is evident with many Android devices barely a year and a half old.
  • Several OS developers, device manufacturers or mobile service carriers add restrictions in the stock firmware ranging from locking the use of the device with one network/region to disabling sideloading of apps (we’re talking about you, AT&T) not available in the official app market, to advanced restrictions removing any chance of getting root access, just to name a few.
Advantages & Disadvantages of Custom ROMs
Custom ROMs are as good or as bad as the effort put into them by their developers. Key advantages of custom ROMs are:
  • First and foremost, choice! There are thousands of custom ROMs out there for a range of devices, each offering a diverse set of features not found in the stock ROM.
  • Update frequency – custom ROMs are often under active development and newer releases of the core operating system are incorporated in them way before updated official ROMs are released. This is particularly true in case of Android devices, where developers start porting newer versions of Android to several devices as soon as they are released.
  • Providing feedback is as easy as leaving a message on the development forum for the ROM in question, resulting in highly efficient bug reporting.
  • Getting support with your issues at the forums is similarly easy, as not only the main developers themselves but also other experienced users of the ROM from the community are glad to help you with your issues and in the process, improve the ROM for everyone.
  • Custom ROMs usually have all the extra restrictions removed, enabling users to sideload apps, tether their mobile data connection to their computer without paying extra for it, gain root access, use their device in any region etc. without any need for circumventing the protection themselves.
  • Performance enhancements and optimizations found in many custom ROMs can make them much faster than stock ROMs, enabling users to get the most out of their devices.
  • Overclocking options are built into some custom ROMs, further speeding up the devices.
  • Undervolting options found in some ROMs on the other hand result in improved battery life.
  • Old phones with little internal memory can benefit most from custom ROMs that allow them to use the external SD card memory for the apps exactly the way they would use the internal memory.
So with all these advantages, there should be no reason to stick with the stock ROM, right? Not necessarily! Like all things in life, custom ROMs come with their disadvantages as well:
  • Due to the lack of extensive testing prior to release, many custom ROMs can be buggy in the beginning and installing a ROM with missing or corrupt critical files can even brick your phone.
  • Several custom ROMs that are ports of ROMs from other phones can have missing functionality that hasn’t been made to work on your phone with the ROM yet.
  • Installing a custom ROM usually involves wiping your phone to factory settings, so you lose your data and start from scratch. Fortunately, Android’s built-in contact syncing along with apps offering message, call log and app backup/restore make this process easier, letting you retain your data.
  • The installation process itself can be cumbersome and may require you to root your phone and often circumvent its security features to allow for custom ROM installation in the first place.
  • Installing a custom ROM will in most cases void your phone’s warranty, though often the process is reversible, meaning you can turn your phone back to stock as long as it isn’t bricked.
  • Installing a ROM to your phone requires you to root it first in most cases. While rooting most phones is easy, some phones require a complicated procedure to be followed before you can install a ROM to it and often, such procedures involve a risk of bricking your device if things go wrong.
Making the Choice
Choosing between a stock ROM and a question ROM is really a matter of your requirements. If the stock ROM on your phone lets you do all that you ever want to do with your phone and doesn’t feel slow, there isn’t any need to go through the trouble of circumventing your phone’s security and installing a custom ROM to it.

However, if you want to take your phone beyond what it currently offers, don’t care much about the warranty and are ready to take the risk of whatever may happen if things go wrong to be able to customize it the way you want, a custom ROM is at times the only solution. Choose wisely!
In case of iOS devices, a ROM is more often called IPSW (after the default firmware installation file extension) and a custom IPSW is usually something you make yourself from the stock IPSW using certain tools and thus, you get to decide what to include in it and what not. The resulting IPSW is usually very similar to the stock one in most ways, except for being unlocked and jailbroken, with Cydia installed. If your device is unlocked and you can jailbreak it using other methods, there is no need to go through the process of building and installing a custom IPSW to your iOS device.
Windows Phone 7 custom ROMs have already started to surface for some devices as well, and much like a custom IPSW, a custom Windows Phone 7 ROM is just a jailbroken variant of the stock ROM with a few extra apps installed, sideloading enabled and some registry hacks applied. If you don’t need any of these features, there is no point in going for a custom ROM. When it comes to Android devices however, there are a lot of reasons to install custom ROMs due to the huge variation offered by them, to the extent that the entire user experience offered by the device can be altered simply by switching to a different ROM.

Choosing the Right Custom ROM
With several custom ROMs available for most Android devices, choosing the right one isn’t always easy. The question of ‘which is the best ROM for _____ phone / tablet’ is as often frowned-upon at the forums as it is asked, since there is no universal answer for it. One ROM may be the best for me while another might suit you better. The only solution is to read a lot, go through the feature list, read user response and if required, ask the developer questions at the forum page for the ROM. Attempt to install the ROM only after you are fairly satisfied that doing so will not harm your device to the extent you can’t fix.

4 – Resources

With this information, you should now be able to get into the world of custom ROMs, and here are a few resources to help you. That should be enough to get you started. For Windows Phone 7 devices, XDA-Developers is a one-stop shop for all your custom ROM needs. As for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch owners, there are different tools out there that work in different cases, depending on your device and its current iOS & baseband version combinations. Using these as keywords, doing a quick search on Google is guaranteed to get you a lot of useful information.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 is better than you think


I was wrong about the Galaxy S 4. Last week, I asserted that brand sentiments had changed enough here -- given Samsung's rising popularity, Apple's image problems and high-profile iPhone-to-Android switchers -- that the South Korean electronics giant could launch the S 4 in the United States. Nope. Reception among bloggers, journalists and the Technorati is largely ice cold. Most first-takes I see call the handset a S 3s and no better than iPhone 5. Idiots.
If Steve Jobs was still alive and introduced a Star Trek-like universal translator for iPhone, there would be cries: "Apple does it again". Tell me what's not innovative about translation from, say, English to Chinese or Japanese to French. In real time. On your phone. Or text-to-speech and speech-to-text translation capabilities? Imagine Jobs demonstrating the "Eraser" feature by taking a photo and jokingly removing marketing executive Phil Schiller from the photo. He could demonstrate dual-mode video by initiating a call with Schiller that includes members of the audience, which I promise would roar and clap.

There's No Magic without a Magician
But Jobs is no longer with us. Apple and not Samsung created these amazing software/cloud services features. The South Korean company doesn't have a spokesman of Jobs' caliber, while cultural etiqutette demands the stilted JK Shin, speaking in a foreign language, deliver the key intro. If Samsung marketers had any sense, Galaxy S IV would have introduced itself, by Shin speaking in Korean and the phone translating. Now that would have had impact.
Still, Samsung did something amazingly right in S 4's unveiling (live stream archive), which is unsurprisingly lost on the bloggers and journalists writing about the smartphone. The launch focused on benefits, rather than features, which was the whole point of the different scenarios acted live from Radio City Music Hall.
Samsung rightly focused on what the phone can do for you rather than hardware features, something Apple often did under Jobs. Now iPhone launches focus too much on hardware specs and, doing so, look too much like competing devices. You don't feel the innovation, something Samsung tried to convey about Galaxy S IV.

Tech Elitists aren't Smarter than You
Based on the demos, Galaxy S IV is an amazing smartphone, jam-packed with lots of promising innovations -- mostly software and supporting cloud services. Conveying S 4's benefits, Samsung has three problems:

1. Presentation.
For all the pomp and pace of the launch event -- hell, with actors and live orchestra performing -- S 4's special qualities didn't come through enough. Samsung needed what Apple used to have -- a masterful marketer standing on stage performing magic tricks, by making benefits come to life in the most aspirational way.
People buy products that make them feel good, about themselves or their future. During the best product launches Jobs made the audience feel like their lives would be better for purchasing the new thing and, occasionally if in the zone, got those watching feeling their lives would be worse should they not buy.

2. Pack mentality.
Jobs' magical touch is widely-known as the "reality-distortion field". The afterglow of a keynote carried through in the stories written about new products -- luster lost without him, based on cooler reception to more recent Apple product announcements.
Make no mistake, there is peer influence among tech writers, which you can measure yourself by doing a few Google News searches. If the first stories praise, the ones that follow tend to have the same tone. Sadly, too many bloggers or journalists look to what others write and deliberately or subconsciously tailor tone accordingly. Haven't you noticed how many stories about tech this or that are similar?
Samsung's "Unpacked" event had no Jobs-like after-glow, even though innovation and benefits are oh-so Apple-like -- and even more. The first stories, coming from the U.S. market, where iPhone is the most popular smartphone, and widely-used by bloggers and reporters, set more of a negative tone. The majority that followed simply echoed criticisms. Too few writers broke from the mob, dared to stand apart, risked being wrong. They formed opinions based on that of others. Shameful. But commonplace.

3. Unrealistic expectations.
Strangely, Samsung is like Apple in another way, although twisted. Rumor and hype set expectations high, and that's a problem Apple encountered many times, too. As such, many early blogs, news stories or product previews say the S 4 falls short, but based more on expectations set by rumors than any meaningful measure.
Unsurprisingly, too many writers fixate on form factor (like Galaxy S III but larger) and hardware specs, while ignoring the stunning software and services benefits. Tech writers obsessed about speeds and feeds often don't have the right priorities. They don't use products like you do. They're fussy and entitled. You're smarter than they are. You're who Samsung sells smartphones to. Tech elitists are gatekeepers to early information, because they have access and you don't.

"Life Companion" is a Development Philosophy
The people who get Galaxy S IV, really do, by understanding the pervasive design philosophy. "The S 4 demonstrates extensive innovation by Samsung", Ian Fogg, IHS Screen Digest principal analyst, opines. He focuses on something I also see, not just from this handset but its predecessor.
Two characteristics define Samsung's design philosophy, which sets it apart from every other handset manufacturer on the planet -- and that includes Apple: Context and humanness. I'll start with the latter, looking back to my analysis of Galaxy S III following its launch last year.
Recapping, the original iPhone stood apart from all other mobiles, not just smart ones, for its humanness. Touch, and its intimacy, and the way the handset responded to your proximity gave it a human quality. Suddenly the phone wasn't an inanimate object but more living thing. Apple extended humanness with each new model. Siri is best representation in iPhone 4S and 5.
The S3 extends this responsiveness, by, for example: the front camera detecting whether you are looking at the phone and keeps the screen lit. How many times has your display gone dark while reading a website or ebook? The phone also can automatically turn on, if recognizing your face. Another example: You're in the middle of texting someone and decide to call instead. Lifting the phone to your face places a call to the recipient.


Those are last model's features and all designed to make the phone more responsive to you -- more human-like. Samsung carries the design philosophy forward. Galaxy S 4 packs eight different sensors and uses them to make the phone highly responsive. Wearing gloves or have chocolate on your hands? Wave instead of touch. Watching a movie and turn your eyes away? Playback stops until you look at the screen again. But this responsiveness is much more.
"The reason for Samsung's choice of Galaxy S 4 tagline, 'Life companion' is because the word 'mobile' in mobile phone is highly misleading", Fogg explains. "Smartphones are most importantly about personal experiences, not mobile ones. Many of the new features that Samsung is adding into the S 4 are about the immediate vicinity and even inside the home, and not focused on really mobile life". Stated differently: The phone is highly contextual.
I have repeatedly asserted that Jobs was wrong to call this the post-PC era. We live in the contextual cloud computing era, where software and connected services matter more than the devices. Samsung's emphasis on "personal experiences" is dead-on right. The South Korean vendor is surprisingly focused on software and services, which I wouldn't have expected from a hardware manufacturer. Galaxy S IV adapts based on context.
Want to share the party with a distant friend? Use both cameras for the video call. Want to check your messages while driving? Let the S 4 read them to you. Snapped a great picture of your kids at the park and some guy in a trench coat in the background makes a face? Remove him immediately. You're with school friends at the park and want to party but have no speakers? Connect each smartphone and use them as a single 5.1-speaker system.
Context is about adaptability. At home, you want to play music on your fancy speakers. At the park, when you don't have them, the multiple-S 4 speaker is good enough -- in that context. At the office, you might read and respond to your messages on the PC. In the car, your hands need to be on the wheel, so you have the phone read them.
Samsung's software and services design approach is all about making the smartphone more human, more responsive, more contextually relevant and more like a personal assistant.
Most every story written about Galaxy S IV so ignores these key benefits, which can change people's lives. I'm appalled by the writers complaining about the lack of innovation here. Many of the most-obvious benefits are like science fiction, which ironically is what most stories slamming the S 4 are: fiction.

How To Buy New Must-Have Products For Next To Nothing

Few things match the thrill of getting an incredible deal on an item we really crave. It’s a basic human response that we all can relate to.

That’s why auctions are so much fun – they present the titillating chance of scoring something for a lot less than we would expect. And that leaves us feeling great, because we now have the object of our desire and we have money left in our pocket.
Marketers know this and exploit it all the time –hence the profusion of sales, discounts, coupons, and the like… so much so, in fact, that we become numb to the tactic. People just don’t believe they’re really getting a bargain.

But now there’s a new online company that has actually figured out a way to sell new must-have consumer products for jaw-dropping prices.
It’s called Quibids – and it turns out that they are selling everything from the latest new Apple iPads and iPods, to MAC and PC notebooks, to HDTV’s and gift cards from the top retailers at prices as low as 5% of regular retail prices. Now, of course, anyone in their right mind would be skeptical of such a claim – so we looked into it to learn just how they do it.

It turns out that both the prices and the products are real. Quibids runs a unique version of the traditional auction - when you bid on an item you actually get charged a small fee of about 60 cents. Collectively, the amount collected for all of the bids on an item allows the company to sell the item at a price far below actual retail and even below the wholesale price they paid the manufacturer for it.
Figuring out how many bids to place and when to place them involves a little strategy but on QuiBids it’s actually a lot of fun. Each auction has a strict time limit and when you place your bid, the system adds a little time to the auction to see if any other bids come in. If you have the winning bid when the clock runs out – you win the item for that price. According to QuiBids CEO Matt Beckham, “Thousands of people are trying QuiBids every day – and then coming back again and again - so we must be doing something right.”

For the auction winner, the true cost of the item is slightly higher than their winning bid price because they have also spent a little for their bids, but this amount is usually modest, and the savings still work out to be spectacular in most cases.
And then there’s the “Buy Now” feature. This allows bidders who did not win an auction to still buy the product they want and apply the cost of the bids they placed as a discount on the regular product price. So, you still get the item and the bids you placed previously in the auction don’t cost you anything.

Android certification gets hands-on at DESIGN West

"Most people know Android as the operating system for smartphones and tablets, but when I look at Android, I don't see a smartphone operating system." says Bill Gatliff, an embedded Linux consultant who is track chair and one of three instructors at DESIGN West's Android Certificate Program. "I see an embedded system application framework based on an efficient Linux kernel."

At the two-day Android Certificate Program on April 22-23, designers will find out how to adapt the underlying Linux kernel powering the Android application framework to nearly any type of embedded system.

Attendees of the hands-on workshop will receive an Android Accessory Kit based on a board byArduino and a certificate from UBM Tech specifying that they completed the coursework."In the two-day session, what we are trying to do is expose the attendees to all the most important aspects of Android as they relate to embedded systems," said Gatliff.

As an application development framework, Google has added many turnkey features for smartphones and tablets to shield application programmers from the underlying Linux kernel, justifying Google's claim that Android is a smartphone and tablet operating system. However, for most embedded systems, it is necessary for designers to drop below the Android system-call level to deal directly with the Linux kernel. Attendees of the Android Certificate Program will learn all the ins-and-outs of accessing the Linux kernel for tasks that Android was not specifically designed to handle.

"The reason Android works so well for smartphones and tablets, is because smartphones and tablets are embedded systems with a graphical user interface," said Gatliff. "But the reason Android is at home in embedded environments, is because it is a really good application framework whether you need a graphical-user interface or not."

The Android Certificate Program is a hands-on tutorial showing engineer how to design embedded systems using Google's popular application framework.
Many embedded systems do not require a graphical user interface (GUI) or the other bells-and-whistles that Google has added to serve smartphone and tablet applications. Consequently, attendees of the Android Certificate Program will learn how get under the hood to strip-down Android to its underlying Linux kernel, then build it back up into a lean, mean OS for a specific embedded system.

The first day will familiarize attendees will all-things-Android, as they relate to the tasks of embedded systems designers--from "Hello Android" to data-stream acquisition from a Linux kernel device driver, post-processed by a user program, and controlled from the GUI.

On the second day, an exclusive hands-on embedded Android workshop will show attendees how to debug using kernel-side tools. Each attendee will be also supplied with their own Android Accessory Kit based on a board by Arduino housing a microprocessor running the Linux kernel. Three instructors--Mike Anderson, Ryan Kuester, and Bill Gatliff--will share the presentation responsibilities for the two-day Android Certificate Program on April 22-23.

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II updated with support for LTE

As T-Mobile continues to prepare their LTE network for consumer use, its handsets are being updated with the appropriate firmware to take advantage of the LTE-capable radios already on board. Today, an update for the T-Mobile branded Samsung Galaxy Note II is being pushed out that does just that.
Packaged in the form of Android 4.1.2, T-Mobile’s Galaxy Note II is officially ready to take advantage of Magenta’s brand new LTE network. Weighing in at just 9MB, this update is a small one, only including a few, “various device improvements,” along with LTE compatibility.
To check if the update is available now for your device, from the home screen press the menu key, enter the settings, enter the “About phone” section of the settings, and finally press “Software Update.” It’s as simple as that. If the update isn’t available quite yet, don’t worry, it will be soon. You can also install Samsung’s Kies software, but waiting for the over the air update is much easier.
T-Mobile’s LTE network was recently tested by several sites, and speeds were in the range of 60Mbps for download, and 20Mbps for upload. Once LTE is widely available, real world speeds are expected to hover around 20Mbps down and 10Mbps up.

Google to unify existing communication platforms into one app: Babble

Google’s various communication platforms are arguably the best of their kind. Google Voice, Talk, Google+ messages and Hangouts are all great products on their own. Using them together, however, is impossible. They don’t talk to each other behind the scenes, leaving text, links, pictures and videos siloed and secluded in their respective apps. Google is finally looking to tackle that issue, under the name Babble.
According to Geek.com, who is citing, “multiple sources,” Google will be unifying all of their communications services into one app, called Babble. The rumor that Google may roll all of their chat services into one app has been around for some time now, but being able to attach a name to the project is new.
Babble is apparently being built from the ground up to be as future proof as possible. Not a whole lot is known right now, just that Babble will cover all of Google’s communication platforms, and be available on both phones and computers. Babble, if that it is what it’s eventually released as, should be unveiled at Google I/O this May.
As a die-hard Google Talk user, I’m excited to see what Google has in store for us with Babble. All of Google’s chat services have needed some work for some time now, but simply retooling them all individually is not the answer. If Babble is successful, it will be Google’s answer to iMessage, BBM, Kik, Facetime, Skype and every other similar service you can imagine. Chances are, it will be the new king of messaging as soon as it’s released.

Apple: Why iPhone Is the Best After Galaxy S4 Launch

You've seen the specs: a 5-inch screen with 441 pixels per inch, 1080p display, a quad-core 1.9GHz processor and a 13-megapixel camera. Feature for feature, Samsung's next-generation Galaxy S4 has the iPhone beat.
But just two days after the S4's launch, Apple released a webpage explaining why its flagship smartphone is better than the competition.

"There's iPhone. And then there's everything else," the page's headline blares. Apple goes on to cite all the reasons why its phone is "unlike anything else," some of which are listed below:
  • The iPhone has received eight consecutive J.D. Power and Associates awards for customer satisfaction with consumer smartphones.
  • Only the iPhone and other Apple products have Retina display.
  • The iPhone has a long battery life — including up to eight hours of talk time — while maintaining a "thin and light design."
  • The iPhone has "ultrafast" wireless and LTE.
  • Only the iPhone and other Apple products have access to the iTunes Store and the App Store, which offers over 800,000 apps. What's more, they are all reviewed by Apple to protect against malware.
  • Only the iPhone has Siri, the intelligent personal assistant.
